Metsatöll – ‘Aio’ (2010)
Rating: 9/10
Release: 3 March 2010
Label: Spinefarm Records
Metsatöll released their ninth album already and it has become as you might aspect from a band like Metsatöll. Fierce, folk and still in ‘that language’ of you which you don’t understand a thing. It’s difficult to say anything about the lyrics when you don’t understand them. They continue to sing in their native language, a bit mysterious, like Týr. You don’t understand a thing, but it sounds awesome. But a bit a shame you can’t sing along and it’s more difficult to get the feeling they want to carry out. The vocals are a bit off key sometimes, sometimes good, but sometimes it brings tears to your eyes like in “Jõud”). How is it possible , so create such nice, powerful music and still sing this bad after nice albums. But it has it’s good points too. The band isn’t commercial and has it’s focus on bringing us their traditional stories and songs. A nice thing the music is very good. Simple guitar, and plenty of space for bagpipes and flute. The first track is a quiet one and it shouldn’t be longer than two minutes, the listener gets a little bore by that time. But fortunately the other songs have more power. A delicious album. An hour of joy and then… You play it again. The have proven they can beat Livakavi with this one.
