Alestorm – ‘Back through time’ (2011)
Rating: 6/10
Release: 3 June 2011
Label: Napalm Records
The Pirates of Alestorm have been in the studio again and managed to release a new album: Back Through Time. It is clear that there has been a lot of alcohol involved during the recording.
Back through time is a fun sequel to Black Sails at Midnight, but no improvement. The Scots are not bursting out of originality in terms of lyrics (the song Rum is definitely worth it if you love shout-along) and also the songs themselves are quite simple.
The whole album sounds a bit smoother and easier and the guitars have become somewhat stronger (e.g. take Shipwrecked and the Norwegian Sunk’en) but still no particular riffs or solos and ooh what are those vocals occasionally fail completely. But who cares when you’re listening to Alestorm. Because it is quite a party!
Can any of these men explain what Rumpelkombo does on the album? It is a six second lasting track (if you have can call it that) and simply does not hold. But perhaps it also describes the whole album. You should listen to this when you are drunk and in a festive mood.
One issue I find worth mentioning and that is Death Throes of the Terror Squid. The title sounds quite ridiculous but the song sounds very epic. It is not so festive and therefore a pleasant variation on the album, even though it’s the last song. Perhaps an idea for the next album to make more of these numbers?
I myself was allready done with all that revelry at Black Sails at Midnight, I miss the quality and Back Through Time can not really crush me. And I fear with me many listenerst think the same.
