Bolero – Voyage from Vinland (2011)
Bolero, a band of apparently contradictory a lot. With the début album ‘Voyage from Vinland” entitled, I initially thought it was going to be a Finnish band. Nothing is less true, this quintet is from Canada. The second mistake I made in my interpretations of the band was that it would be a black metal band, given the logo. This was only partially true. These Canadians make a good game folk-metal, with a large role for the keys. The throttle word on most of the songs quite depressed, with a welcome resting point here and there. Although these peaceful interludes are welcome, it is obvious the lesser numbers of the plate. Although the album sounds very good, and become well-made music, the songs jump anywhere, and they don’t stick in your head. Even after dozens of times, no riff stays with you, something which isn’t a good sign at folk-metal.
All in all a nice début. The music they make is good, although the songs do not linger. When they work on this, I think this band has a bright future ahead. The album is fun to listen once, and it would certainly be a good live band. Definitely keep an eye on, because they have potential!
