Subway to Sally – ‘Schwarz in Schwarz’ (2011)
Rating: 7/10
Label: Universal Records
To kick it right in, the new Subway to Sally is which you expect form this band. A very solid album, without strolling of their, own-made, path of German Medieval folk.
For the people who are not familiar with Subway to Sally, it’s a German six-piece, grounded long ago in 1990. With ‘Schwarz in Schwarz’ this band delivers their 11th album. Subway to Sally is one of the greatest bands in the German folk-genre, together with bands like In Extremo and Saltatio Mortis.
Let’s return to this record. The band hits of with a heavy swinging rock-song, like we know by Subway to Sally. Heavy guitars, swinging melodies played on authentic instruments, completed with the raw voice of singer Michael Boden. The biggest problem is, this goes on for 12 tracks, without really big surprises or going out of the regular pattern. Solid tracks are alternated with ballads, which the band is obliged to do, because their a part of their style.
The final judgement is not very hard. All in all it’s a very decent and solid Subway to Sally album. Nice catchy songs, very easy listening. On the other hand it’s never very surprising, and none of the songs really jumps out. Subway to Sally is nice, but there should be some more variation in their upcoming records to stay interesting.
