Izmoroz – ‘Зигомёд’ (2012)
By: Thijs
Rating: 6/10
Release: 2 March 2012
Label: Grailight Productions
The vocal intro of the album promises one thing: This is going to be one energetic record. No false expectations are being created either; Izmoroz delivers tight up-tempo metal with harsh, evil vocals, now and then strengthened clean vocals. Black, death and trash are initially supported by beautiful, epic folk elements, but as the album progresses, the folk fades and the entire album suddenly becomes a lot less interesting. A shame, because the first half of the record is really well done.
Dark en jolly tunes keep interchanging, which gives the album at least somewhat of a good edge. Their sound really shines more during the darker parts, where the melodies sound a whole lot less cliché, and the vocals come out very well. The jollier parts in some cases sound like they’ve been pulled straight out of Arkona’s repertoire, and don’t leave the impression I’m listening to something I’ve not heard before.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the band, it’s clear they are all experienced musicians. Bonus points go to the drummer, who really puts out some amazing parts. Unfortunately, the songs are, by exception of the first couple of songs, not specifically original or grabbing. Still, I can hear there’s potential. I’ll be keeping an eye out for their next album.
