Folk Metal Jacket – ‘Spill This Album’ (EP 2013)
Rating: 7/10
Release: 20 April 2013
Label: Moonlight Records
Folk Metal Jacket has released their début. On Moonlight records they released an EP called ‘Spill This Album’. Funny name, but they have a funny band name as well, so this shouldn’t surprise you.
But what is more important, does the album surprise us?
What immediately catches my ear is the very obvious banjo in their sound. Regarding their history this also isn’t surprising. This banjo leaded to the foundation of this band. The music has a high speed, which is a perfect condition for the fast banjo music. The fierce metal-screams are of a typical Italian kind. Unfortunately this is something which bothers me in all kind of Italian bands the most. This screams don´t seem very natural in all places.
When you´re not allergic to the sound of a banjo the rest of the music is pretty nice. It´s all very up-tempo. With solid guitars and a nice banjo. This banjo gives Folk Metal Jacket a nice own sound. It’s very well integrated in the music, but also stands out. This instrument is the catching one throughout their music. The vocals are more or less the same in all songs which takes away a lot of the tension of this album.
A very nice one for a start. With a bit more variation in the vocals it could be even nicer. Maybe not surprising with the most brilliant songs. But it deserves your attention, because of the nice new sound they managed to create with this heavy load of banjo.
