Wolfsword – ‘Beyond the Thunderclouds’ (2013)
Rating: 5.5/10
Release: 16 July 2013
Label: Independent
With song-titles like ‘Endless Mead’, ‘The Dreams of Odin’ and ‘Beyond the Thunderclouds’ it’s easy to guess what kind of music you get. These 5 gentlemen from England make typical folk-metal with a nice melodic swing to it.
What struck me immediately after the spoken intro ‘Ode to my Father’ is that musically, the guitar plays a lead role. Easy-listening, swinging guitar-riffs and catchy keyboard-melodies are the most important on this release. If this review was solely based on the instrumental side, I’d given a higher mark. However, there is one point I didn’t talk about yet.
And that’s the vocals. The vocals are basically pushed through, which results in the rest of the mix sounding dull and powerless. This isn’t a real problem, if the vocals were of the same skill-level as the rest of the music. A shame, because it worsens the overall quality of the record.
Wolfsword definitely has potential. Instrumentally, everything is more than fine and is good to listen to. But please, do something about the production, or the vocalist, because this is definitely not going to work!
