Kampfar – ‘Djevelmakt’ (2014)
Rating: 8.5/10
Release: 27 January 2014
Label: Indie Recordings
Before I begin, I need to say that I have respect for Kampfar. 20 years in business, and with ‘Djevelmakt’ they release an album that sounds more inspired and energetic than ever before. Yeah, this is going to be fun.
For those who don’t know Kampfar (shame on you!), it’s fairly easy to explain. Kampfar plays Pagan blackmetal. As it should be. Raw, energetic, harsh, but in the same time really atmospheric. That the atmosphere is not lovely and happy is something everyone could predict.
Where the previous album, ‘Mare’, dealt with the world of witchery, Djevelmakt conceptually digs deeper into the muck and bile of the underworlds and brings to light a world where rats feed on the blackest souls. This is also the atmosphere that radiates from the music. Grimm, dark and mystical are words with which the music can be described.
This great release shows that Kampfar still knows how to make a decent record, even after 20 years. True to their roots, not really innovative, but oh so good!
