Virrasztók – ‘A Halál Színei’ (2014)
Rating: 7.5/10
Release: 1 February 2014
Label: Nail Records
Virrasztók is a psychedelic folk-metal band from Hungary. They’re about to release their third album. This time there’s no big part for the typical violin, which has of course some influences on their sound.
It sounds still very nice, but maybe a little less folky. There’s not a very prominent role for any authentic instrument, which leaves the folk-elements mainly to the vocals. A félhold árnyékában is with it’s ‘balkan’sound probably the most folk-sounding track.
Despite the fact we at Folk-metal.nl would like to hear a bit more folk, it doesn’t mean this is a bad album, on the contrary! It all sounds quite nice, and it sounds very good over all. There are a lot of tracks with a very nice tension in it like A lélekharang for instance with it´s nice bells. And the compositions are most of the time very skilfully made. This strong compositions flourish on the nice guitar and keys backed up by the very solid and skilled drums. On top of this the combination of male and female vocals and the typical style of Virrastok which is hard to describe and you get an unique sound and delicious sound.
‘A Halál Színei’ is a very nice album by Virrasztók, a great asset is their unique style. The band has changed a little, and adapted nicely to the loss of a violin. But from our point of view, over here at Folk-metal.nl, this is also the downside of this album. Of course we would have liked a little more folk. But don’t understand me wrong, this doesn’t mean this is album is not nice!
