Woebegone – Demo (2013)
Rating: 7/10
Release: 2013
Label: Independent
Woebegone is a band from my new hometown, Trondheim in Norway. Norway is known for its excellent metalbands so Woebegone needs to prove themselves. They consider their music to be SpaceFolk. Yet another subgenre in the folk-metal. Not really an idea what to expect so let’s give it a try.
The demo consists of four songs all between 5 to 6 minutes. Lunarian haze starts off with a minute of piano/violin introduction, later accompanied by guitars which goes pretty smoothly. I didn’t expect clean vocals to show up, a surprise that they are not screams. Although the vocals fit to something you would expect with space metal.
Second song is Universal Score in which the violin dominates in a bit irritating way. Luckily the guitars take over before the violin becomes really annoying.
Nice is that all songs start in a different way. Sung among the heaters starts with vocals and this is where the music finally gets some speed. Also well done is the variation in the song.
Ocean floor is the last song of this demo which starts quite boring and does not get interesting further in the song, a shame.
Recording and mixing can be done better but for a first demo it’s okay. During the whole demo I am waiting for the moment the music will really speed up. I know they call it spacefolk so it should be a bit atmospheric I guess, but the songs miss some power, which does not have to come with speed, it can also done in different musical ways, but still power is missing, the music never really explodes.
Altogether it is a nice demo but there is a lot to improve.
