Kaarnekorpi – ‘Aaltojen alle’ (Demo 2014)
Rating: 8/10
Release: 17 March 2014
Label: Independent
Kaarnekorpi may have started as a duo, with no less then seven bandmembers we can call them a full band nowadays. The band has even added a female singer to the band.
The band has released a seventh demo. Why a demo? It beats me. This is a simply a very nice EP.
Aaltojen alle (Beneath the Waves) has four tracks, and they sound very nice.
Since we’ve lost Battlelore and we don’t hear a lot of Kivimetsan Druidi and Crimfall, there’s a niche to be filled in. And with Aaltojen alle Kaarnekorpi does that, they’re not beneath the waves at all, they’re right in the middle of these epic melodic symphonic kind of telling us stories in Finnish.
It just the music which drags you along into a story, with the solid and sometimes catchy guitars, the symphonic keys and the dark voice of Kimmo. The female vocals are used to give it all a soft epic touch or to interact with the male vocals.
This isn’t a demo for me. Aaltojen alle can be qualified ad a full grown EP. Kaarnekorpi has ripened and sounds very mature, and they should after all these years. With tracks like this they can make a full length, they won’t bore you anywhere.
A very strong EP, when you like bands like Battlelore and Kivimetsan Druidi you will surely like this.
