Mr. Irish Bastard – ‘The World, The Flesh and the Devil’ (2015)
By: Grinning Beggar
Rating: 9/10
Release: 8 May 2015
Label: Reedo Records
Mr. Irish Bastard hail from Munster, Germany and have been active in the international Celtic Punk scene since mid-2006. The band cites some pretty far ranging musical influences from Sepultura to Social Distortion, and most notably The Pogues.
A longtime fan of Celtic stylings of Mr. Irish Bastard I feel honest in saying the last few releases have sounded like modernized, punked up Germanic version of The Pogues, complete with the raspy stout soaked vocals of Mr. Irish Bastard, Himself. Though their most recent offering “Never Mind The Bastards – Here Is Mr. Irish Bollocks” from 2011, was a really fantastic take on “Never Mind the Bollocks…” by the Sex Pistols.
This brings us to 2015. It has been 5 years since a self-penned studio album has been released by Mr. Irish Bastard and in that time something amazing happened. Mr. Irish Bastard has seemingly gone back to their roots. “The World, the Flesh & the Devil” plays much like the early Mr. Irish Bastard releases such as “St. Marys’ School of Drinking” and “The Bastard Brotherhood”. Not only is this recording reminiscent of their early albums, they have also taken that distinctive sound and fine-tuned it.
With the clean vocals, obvious influences of their many musical influences and apparent musical ability displayed on “The World, the Flesh & the Devil”, Mr. Irish Bastard shows us why they are one of the premier Celtic Punk acts in Europe. If you have not yet grabbed this album, I would not hesitate any longer! Unquestionably, “The World, the Flesh & the Devil” is truly amazing and I would say quite possibly one of Mr. Irish Bastards best releases to date.
