Žrec – ‘Klíč k pokladům’ (EP 2017)
Rating: 7/10
Release: 19 May 2017
Label: Independent
Five years have passed since Czech band Žrec released ‘Paměti’, an album which was conceived by Folk-metal.nl with mixed feelings. And a lot has changed for the band since then. Only two of the members active in those days are left and there are two new members added. The Flute is the only authentic instrument which is left and the female vocals are skipped.
This EP sounds a lot less messier then the previous one, that’s for sure a very good thing. The compositions are a lot better, there are not as many ideas put into one song, without any coherence. But there are songs like ‘Vozka’ which would have come out better when they were split into 2 songs, this track is just as the title-track a bit too long which makes it difficult to stay tuned the whole song. The music seems to sound less solid and the folk-elements are cut down a bit as well.
Production-wise the album lacks some depth and the sound is not clear enough.
Žrec has made a nice step with this EP ‘Klíč k pokladům’, the songs are more coherent and the musicianship is a lot better, there’s still some work to be done, but with this album Žrec shows they know what they want and they are on their way.
