What the world needs is more bands like Ferocious dog. Throughout history music has been used to bring light to the darkest chapters of our lives. Protest songs and thought provoking lyrics have been used to bring social consciousness to the masses and to highlight the evil that men and governments do to the people in their power. Music has been, and will continue to be a force for change in our society’s and as long as there are bands making great music like this people will tap their feet as they are pushed to into a greater knowledge of the world around them. Ferocious dog are a very socially conscious band and their music and lyrics are designed not only to make you smile and sing along but also to make you feel something. If you can get through one of their albums without raising your fist in fury, feeling anger or disgust at the government that runs your life, or even shedding a tear over a touching moment, then you’re not listening close enough. Red is record that starts hard and finishes hard. Along the way there are stories of the dark chapters of our past as well as the twisted times we live in now and all of it is set to a wonderful soundtrack full of intense moments. Beautiful violin, deep lyrics, and surprising arrangements lead the listener on a politically charged musical journey. The opener Black Gold takes on slavery and shines with its use of mandolin and violin. Songs like American Dream, Spin and Together we are strong are good examples of music used as protest and all are rousing good songs as well. A&B is a force of its own. The song is about Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and features a wonderful performance on violin. The song is definitely about the hardest story ever told. It’s one of the greatest songs on the album. The two covers Black leg miner, and Johnny I hardly knew ya, are both excellent and well picked for the record. The album finishes strong with the burner Small Town Hero and the reggae led Class War a great song with deep lyrics and an interesting change of pace from the rest of the platter. Ferocious dog are for people who like their music with a message and hopefully with other bands like them they can lead a social revolution that will make our world a little better.
