Korpiklaani – ‘Kulkija’ (2018)
Rating: 8.5/10
Release: 7 September 2018
Label: Nuclear Blast
The -perhaps- most popular folk-metal band in the world, brings us a new record, which despite sounding with their own recognized style, is perceived as a more mature album, calmed and evolved from the sound of previous releases. A fresh sound that invites more to be heard than previous albums, where their music took us to an endless celebration in a forest with a few drinks, today it seems they invite us to tell stories around a bonfire.
Although, not everything is tranquility. “Juomamaa” and “Neito” – one of my favorites songs in this album- along with others are cheerful songs, they do not have same energy of previous productions, compensating with an excellent musical production and mastering -great work of Svante Forsbäck, here and in “Live at Masters of Rock”.
I can’t stop thinking that maybe, I was used to feeling that their music flooded my body with the desire of jumping and headbanging and now, I’m looking forward for the same in each track.
As always, there is a high quality of sound in the voice and instruments, which is to be expected given the trajectory of the Finnish band. Varied melodies full of professionalism, and the 10 album experience that you have to listen to. As said by Sami about his interpretation of the accordion and Tuomas’ fiddle: “[he] and I had lots of space to develop and play the folk arrangements.”
We, thus discover their evolution and growth to never get bored, showing that we will have much more from Korpiklaani in the future.
