After giving these two cds multiple spins I can say that they are both pleasant and well executed. They are somewhat different sides of the band which is I suppose the reason for two discs. Dreamers is essentially a country album with some punk, emo, and celtic overtones. Pleasant guitar and violin carry the album and some songs are standouts. The opener “Crazy Love Song”, has a particularly memorable tune and lyrics. Nashville is sweet, filled with tasty licks and nice violin and harmonica. I would have liked to hear more harmonica on this disc it really adds to the overall affect. “Honey” , carries the same feeling of sweet melancholy and is also a standout. Finally , “Saint Oliver”, an ode to a child is a great way to finish the album. The record is good overall but doesn’t break any new ground and the singer is very good but has a voice that is a little emo for me. I think if you like his voice you’ll like the album very much. The rest of the disc has more of the same type of songs. All are good but seem to run together after a while .
“Modern Times”, is a much more upbeat and punk/celtic disc. The band lets its hair down and picks up the tempo. In this context the singer’s voice sounds much better to my ears. The music also has more depth and texture. “We Are Fearless”, sounds great and reminds me of Black Parade era My Chemical Romance.” Tracy Boys Know How To Party”, is punk with a country backbone and sparks a nice fire. “Modern Times” has a nice punk rock feel also and uses the violin well to add that overall melancholy feel. Finally” Side By Side” features an excellent rock melody and will stick in your head.
I think if the band combines the two sides of its personality and trims the fat a little they are capable of great things. The melancholy feel of the songs and the violin throughout really stands out and makes the music worth listening to. Lyrics are thoughtful and the melodies are memorable. I’m looking forward to hearing more from this band.
