1. Zmey Gorynich ‘Mother Russia’
With 34 out of 50 points Zmey Gorynich managed to claim the title ‘Best Debut-album’ this year. Voted ‘best’ by two members and second by one, these Russians are the obvious winners this year.
“The sound quality is there too with punch in the guts drums, crunchy bass and guitar and plenty of attention paid to the folk instruments and vocals. Again, I think this might overwhelm most of you like a tidal wave. For those that want to surf on the waves of epicness, grab your board and jump onto the next one cresting in “Mother Russia” and come along for the ride……I would say debut full length album of the year contender for sure.”
2. Frost Giant ‘The Harlot Star’
Frost Giant has the ability to mix and mash styles of music and somehow make everything sound fresh and incredible and there are little sonic surprises around every corner of this masterpiece of an album. If this album is any indication of the quality of music that will be released in 2018 its going to be a great year. Frost Giant is unleashing a melodic beast of an Album with The Harlot Star. Highly recommended.
3. Kara Han ‘Ottoman Slap – Osmanlı Tokadı’
This debut-EP of Kara Han was chosen Best Debut of 2018 by two members of our team!
Every song has it’s merits. And yet there is one song I can’t stop listening to. And that’s Hicaz Mandıra. What fine melodies and rhythms! Think hard rock of the seventies (Focus, Rainbow), but louder. And at times it reminds me of power metallers Arrayan Path from Cyprus. Best song I have heard in the last few years. I am going to stop writing now and listen to it again. And again. And again. Fantastic stuff. And this is a debut, folks! Insane.
4. Nornsaga ‘The Shores of Níðhöggr’
With 27 out of 50 points, Nornsaga finds themselves just one point short of a top 3 position.
“an impressive and complete a debut as you can find. Featuring a whopping 12 tracks at 60 minutes, Nornsaga have gone above and beyond what most do for a debut release with nothing prior”
5 /6. Battle Tales ‘The Ire of the Condemned’
Where Under Siege and Emerald Shine received 23 points, Dyrnwyn and Battle Tales gathered 24/50. Four bands very close together with their debut album.
“The album is very well done and features many folk music flourishes scattered into the tracks. The whistle and recorder are particularly memorable. “
5/6. Dyrnwyn ‘Sic Gloria Transit Mundi’
Where no. 6 you will ask. Not only 7 and 8th place were close. The bands at place 5 and 6 have the same points as well.
One of these two band is Dyrnwyn, tomorrow we will reveal the other one.
” I think the overall best part of the album is that it has a nice cross section of metal styles at play…..melodic black metal, folk metal, power metal. Dyrnwyn can weave in and out of all of these styles without hesitation and makes for an enjoyable listen.”
7. Under Siege ‘Under Siege’
This self-entitled album by Under Siege, scored 23/50 points as well, but it’s on a well deserved 7th place, because they received the maximum points of one or our team.
“If I was to give you a few bands as comparison I would throw three names at you….Skiltron and Ensiferum with Manegarm to a lesser extent. … A nice start for Under Siege and interested to see if a follow up release has more folk/pipes…”
8. Emerald Shine ‘Misty Tales’
Emerald shine gathered 23/50 points. 2 times chosen as third best debut-album, which is a nice step forward for this Polish Band. This is their first full length and refreshing their line-up has done them good.
“The band has obviously grown a lot over the years and the changes in the line-up were certainly for the good. They have matured, and despite the fact they have to do everything on their own, since they’re not with a label, the album has a very fine quality.”
9. North Hammer ‘Stormcaller’
At the 9th place with 16/50 points we find North Hammer with their album ‘Stormcaller’.
“So, when you think that the song is going to continue in one way, you get a surprise which makes each song unique. Some songs may start slowly, but do not confuse this with the calm after the storm”.
10. Verikalpa ‘Taistelutahto’
Today we start our to publish Folk-metal.nl’s top 10 of the best Debut-Albums of 2018.
At the 10th place we find Verikalpa with their album ‘Taistelutahto’.
“Take some Ensiferum and mix with some Nordheim, Finntroll, Voloh, Svartby, Trollgasm and Vorgrum and you should already know that this is gonna rock your brain. Swampy to an extent but not overly so with slightly faster than mid tempo tracks that punch you in the guts”
