Verikalpa – ‘Tuoppitanssi’ (2020)
Rating: 8.0/10

he Finnish Blood of Kalpa (lose translation of Verikalpa) return with Tuoppitanssi after their debut of Taistelutahto in 2018, with a solid showing in my colleague’s review around the time I joined Folk-Metal.nl. Let’s just say these guys produced more songs in that time than I have reviews LOL and with two new members on drums and guitar joining in 2019, I would argue the sound has stylistically improved.
No unnecessary intros slowing the record down, Naulattujen Vaellus kicks off with melodies too reminiscent of times passed in a mid-paced anthem, transcending a earning for Ensiferum, Fintroll, etc classics. Sounds of organs stand out in fast-hitting breakdowns part of that overtly familiar theme. Group chants and harsh vocals integrate through guitar and key overtures as the second track follows in double time. I could go on dissecting each track with the same unrelenting continuity as the album and to be completely honest, my opinion is in disparity over Verikalpa. They resonate so deeply with my generational metal upbringing yet lack nuance or innovation. As harsh as that might seem, the album is an easy super fun listen! Rooted mostly in the title track, Varjosahti, and Karhunkaataja. Perfect for gym time when distractions like complex themes, rhythms and copious instrument solos become distracting rather than inspirational. If looking to transform yourself back to 2000s, this is the time machine for you! But with 2020 production quality and the novelty of fresh characters to follow on the internets. Or perhaps you’re in need of a swamp dive? It so happens Verikalpa can help with that as well. In fact, the varied taps of Jussi provide every OG folk-metal journey you’re hoping to revisit with bass and percussion support from Sami and Jari to round out the ensemble appropriately.
Tuoppitanssi is sure to become a successful, entertaining sophomore release, promising a bright future for Verikalpa. Even so, I remain a sceptic, wondering at which point something becomes overdone… music snob, signing off.
