Mornir – ‘Dämmerstund’ (2020)
Rating: 9/10
Release: 10 April 2020
Label: Independent
Mornir from Freising (Bavaria) is coming after one Demo (2013), an EP (2015) with their first full length release “Dämmerstund”. After a very epic intro Mornir is not making any compromises and is hitting off with pure Pagan Metal (Melodic Death Metal). The release is satisfying from the beginning all needs of fans of Pagan Metal fans and additionally Mornir understands to add the violin as folk element which is giving the music a very special folky sound. On the first three tracks Mornir is delivering on “Flammenschlinge”, “Altvorderne Macht” and “Hexer” very solid Pagan Metal compositions until on “Lebenshauch” they reduce the speed and harshness of the tracks and vocals, showing us a different side of them adding some female vocals and giving the violin more room. On the next tracks they are back in their core field delivering a mix of melodic death, pagan and folk metal. Mornir is not limiting themselves to any sub-genre and every track has a different focus, but all songs are performed on a very high level. My highlight on this release is the track “Herr in Wind und Tälern”, which is basically combining all the genres which Mornir stands for.In general I would say that Mornir is more for the fans of the harder sounds, but due Mornir is showing us so many sides of them on the record, all folk-metal lovers will also find the one or other pearl on this on. With 13 songs and a total playing time of almost 50 minutes I would like to thank Mornir for such a strong first full length release!
