McScallywag – ‘Songs For The Wicked’ (2020)
Rating: 7/10
Release: 2020
Label: Independent
McScallywag is a dutch band with an nontraditional approach to folk and celtic music.. Using a wide range of instruments and sounds that range from bluegrass to punk rock they mix their songs to keep things interesting. The music is a little accordion heavy for me but they have a nice folksy sound and while most of the vocals are dominantly male they do add a nice ballad ,Farewell lowlands of Holland, with a female lead. That song is one of the album highlights for me along with Oh Dirty River, Johnny Fuckup and the excellent instrumental, Ballydesmond Polka. The songs on the album do seem to run together a little as they sound very similar, but each track contains little surprises and the lyrics are well done. Overall the album is a nice effort and the cover art is great by the way. One of the best cover designs I’ve seen lately. I would say for me the singers voice is a bit unique and it may be a love it or hate it type scenario. Maybe its just my opinion but I would like to hear a better mix of voices with more female and male interaction. I think the lyrics are written well and the album contains a good mix of styles. Most should be able to find something they like here. Enjoy!
