Dreadnoughts – ‘Roll & Go’ (2022)
Rating: 7/10
Release: 24 June 2022
Label: Independent
The Dreadnoughts have crafted a fine group of songs here. All the things that make the band stand out are included. There are shanty, polkas, punk and vocal offerings and the album has an uplifting feel. Obviously someone in this band really loves cider as the album starts with a tribute to the stuff. I’m not a lover of cider but the song is great. I really love the vocals with this band and my favorite type of song is on tap with Brisbane Harbor. Minimal instruments and just a great vocal track its definitely a standout for me, Rodney Rocket hits the sweet spot as well it’s a great story song and it has a great hook . The band is really good at creating different song structures within an album and different rhythms as well so that songs don’t sound the same. Problem has that immediate polka feel and a bit of an eastern sound, and Battlefield 1885 has a metal punk structure that ensures a song that everybody will enjoy.Other standouts include The Storm and the title track Roll and Go both are great songs with the pirate type feel. This album was crafted during the pandemic and it feels urgent and exciting as it longs for adventure and experiences. All in all a great album with some missteps but also some great songs. The Dreadnoughts are a favorite of mine and I am always waiting to see what comes next.
