Nemoreus – ‘Orcunadoras’ (2023)
Rating: 8.5/10
Release: 8 December 2023
Label: Independent
Nemoreus is a six-member Austrian folk-metal band and Orcunadoras is their highly-anticipated second full-length album, originally released as four EPs. The band has a great sound: moody, atmospheric metal with folky additions of a flute, fiddle, and bouzouki. Fabian Zechmeister’s mostly-English vocals are clean and plaintive and complemented by some haunting melodies. I have a soft spot for bands that mix languages, so the inclusion of “Das rote Tuch” and “Angst” in German scores very well with me.
Reviews of three of the four EPs are on this site, but it’s worth recapping the highlights. “Orcunadoras”, the title track, is my favorite. It sums up the musical style and includes the album title. “Black Roses” is worth mentioning: it’s slow and mournful with an acoustic opening introducing the song’s main riff. “Into the Dawnlight” features guest vocals from Daedric Tales’ Alexandra Kastrinakis and is equally lovely.
The album is the sum of the four EPs plus an additional seven-minute rambling epic “What You Can’t Show You Must Hide”. It’s competent, but it’s got an unwieldy length and lacks cohesion, so there are parts that I really like mixed with parts that can’t capture my attention. Despite the album’s divided release, all the songs are cut from the very same cloth, and for that it’s hard to pick a favorite. Chapter Three: Rogue is strong, but Chapter Two: Wanderer has “Into the Dawnlight”. The style of release is fun because you don’t have to ask these difficult questions of yourself. And, as a reviewer, I was hoping we’d have a few more episodes.
Plaintive vocals, darker melodies, tasteful fiddle and flute parts… Nemoreus has mastered their sound and it’s spread in equal measure throughout in Orcunadoras. The album’s on Bandcamp, and while it’s fun to review separately, listening is certainly easier when it’s all in one place. Check it out!
