Folkearth, Folks of the World United

Posted on 12 November 2013 by Michel7 February 2021
folkodia battles and myths

Folk-metal.nl had a nice chat with Gianluca Tamburini and Hildr Valkyrie of Folkearth and Folkodia.

The whole project Folkearth started with an idea of Ruslanas (Metfolvik), their beloved band mate that lost his battle against cancer earlier this year. He could have better answered the questions about this subject, but since he’s not with us anymore, Gianluca and Hildr will try to do that. The idea was to unite musicians from all around the world, and in that way join the traditional music influences of each country.
And the idea behind the project has never changed during the years, it just happened that different musicians have been involved in the project throughout the years, but all of them tried to do their very best in full respect of the basic idea.
Ruslanas, being the leader and the creator of the project, was taking care of finding suitable musicians for this project. Some volunteered for the cause and he decided whether to let them in or not, some others joined at his request. Since he passed away, the line-up will probably remain the same. But they are always open to let new, good and willing musicians in, in the chance they are needed!

Percival Schuttenbach interview

‘The only limitation is imagination’

Percival Schuttenbach 1

Percival Schuttenbach may not have a recordlabel, but they released a very very nice album Svantevit recently. About time to give them our compliments on this masterpiece and have a nice chat with Polish folk-metallers.
Mikolaj: ‘Thank you very much 🙂 This album cost a lot of our work and we’re really proud of it.’
We at Folk-metal.nl think it’s a shame a lot people don’t know about Percival Schuttenbach, so can you tell us a bit about the band.
‘We started in 1999 and we’re probably the first folk-metal band that appeared in Poland. Plenty of shows, many albums and demo-CDs
and a lot of various projects. During those years our music has been changing but always contained two elements – folk and metal.

Frosttide interview

Wide Awake for Heidenfest

frosttide

Frosttide presents themselves to the world with the album Awakening, but a lot of folk-metalfans know them longer. At Folk-metal.nl we first heard from Frosttide with their previous EP Our Journey. A lot seemed to have happened for Frosttide since we wrote a review on that one last year. Time to speak to these guys…

Posted on 10 September 2013 by Michel3 March 2021
caladmorband

We get lot’s of new albums at Folk-metal.nl, but it’s not every day we get an album from a rather unknown band, which as astonishing as the new Caladmor album ‘Of Stones and Stars’. An quite unique style, really surprising… It’s about time we have a chat with these guys. We draw Maede Baumann away from the microphone, drum-kit and synthesizer and Babs Brawand from her microphone to answer our questions and luckily they found the time to clear things up.

Circle J interview

Circle J preaches alcohol

circle j

Previous to the concert of the Mahones in ‘de Melkweg’, Amsterdam, I had an interview with these Canadians and with their support act: Circle J. I’m not an insider of the folk punk scene and the gentlemen of Circle J seemed not to be very talkative. But, when they were warmed up a bit they talked a lot.

Mael Mordha, Different Beasts

Posted on 22 August 2013 by Michel2 September 2022
mael mordha bloodstock2

Mael Mórdha is an Irish band which has a fabulous new album, the band has a beautiful name, so this gets us curious, what does this name mean or is made up by somebody, we spoke with Shane Cahill, drummer in this great band?
Back in 98 the line-up of the band Uaigneas was changed and Rob came up with the name Mael Mórdha. Later, when reading a biography of Brain Boru, High King of Ireland, he realised that Mael Mordha was Brian’s arch nemesis and thus the name of the band. He thought it sounded good and fit with-in the sensibilities of the sound he was aiming for at the time.
Mael Mórdha isn’t only a name from ancient history, the band is rather old itself. A lot of bands don’t survive for 10 years and Mael Mórdha is way past that. And they’re are quite known with insiders of the genre, but it seemed they never really got out of a rather small audience. They have been ‘plugging away to varying degrees’ over the best part of the last 15 years. They have 3 albums out and a split 7” with Primordial and have played shows all over Europe too. They obviously have been busy all these years. But apart from that, the members have been living the ‘normal’ life… Folk-metal.nl is of the opinion they could be become a lot better known with their new album ‘Damned when Dead’ out.

Druantia plays folk-metal,

only the burgers are blackened

druantia lotte

While enjoying some blackened burgers and steaks the big Druantia interview-barbecue took place, I had a nice chat with Nick and Lotte of this Dutch band. It sounds a bit like a butcher judging his own sausages, but we were of the opinion we should do the first ever Druantia interview while Nick is a member of our team. Unfortunately we were beaten, and we couldn’t publish it as first.

The Mahones love Holland

Posted on 30 July 2013 by Michel13 February 2021
the mahones

So how has Holland been so far?
I love Holland. It is the first place in Europe I came to and for the band it is the base since 1998. Every time we come to Europe we start here. We store all our equipment here, hire a bus here.
Your bass player died here in Amsterdam. You don’t have any hard feelings?
Well I wasn’t in the band at that time. I was in high school when that happened. Finney had a really hard time. But you can’t me angry at Amsterdam. Being here is sort of honoring him, keeping the memories.
It’s awfull. We do charityshows every year for a library that was set up in his name.
