On „Wielandstahl“ Surturs Lohe present nine songs, that could not be more epic and primeval. This is old school Thuringian Pagan Metal. High velocity riffing is contrasted with mighty choirs and folky use of the flute embellishes acoustic guitar arrangements, reminiscent of early works of Ulver. Lyrically „Wielandstahl“ is an …Continue reading →
There will be a new Lándevir album in 2021! After so long without live activity and without knowing how the situation is going to evolve, the band has been composing and demoing new songs for a few months, so they have decided not to release an EP as announced, but …Continue reading →
Band statement “The new release of Oah, Ash & Thorn is called ‘To Gaze on Stars of Frost’ very much on purpose: it is a line from ‘Suspended and Frozen’, yes, but more so does it neatly summarize what we are attempting to do with this set of songs. Three …Continue reading →
1. Finntroll – ‘‘Vredesvävd’ 55 out of 60 points, well well, that’s a winner for sure. The whole team had the latest Finntroll album in their top 3! Their last album dated all the way back to 2013, but what a hell of a comeback they made. Albums like Ur Jordens Djup and Nifelvind remain in my regular rotation, soon to be joined by Vredesvavd. Singles like Mask and Ormfolk could easily nestle in either, despite being conceived a decade apart. Ever familiar entrances, interchanges and melodic aura help to forget the passage of time with supporting gang hymns teleporting to forbidden Forrest soirées. It should also go without saying that Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns continues to excel as frontman and vocal expert of the harsh persuasion that only gets better with time, like a yummy spicy whiskey. Not overshadowing the arrangement expertise of keyboardist-composer Henri “Trollhorn” Sorvali. Their latest creation thoroughly satisfies every expectation and scratches all folk metal itches, in complete blackened humpa abandonment.
Dear Folkers, we hope that you had happy holidays and that all of you are safe and healthy! Today is the last day of the very challenging year 2020 and most properly you are already preparing to celebrate the new year with your friends or family in a safe enviroment! Most properly the year 2020 was surely not the best one, as the CoVid-19 pandemic was dominating our daily lifes and now it is time to look positivley into the new year 2021. Times will get better and we will hopefully come back to a normal life worldwide soon. As a small gift for you for the year 2021 we did something very special and unique. We created a Spotify List, which is called “Folk-Metal.nl Encyclopedia”, which is covering all artists of fierce ‘n’ furious folk music which had ever been reviewed or reported about on our webpage and which are available on Spotify.
The playlist is covering all genres of fierce’n’furious folk music, such as Folk/Pagan/Pirate Metal, Medieval Rock, Celtic Punk and Speed Folk, so basically everything what a folker’s heart requires. Same as in our playlist “Folk-Metal.nl 2020” every artists is represented with one song and the playlist already has a running time of nearly 58 hours. We tried to establish a full Folk-Metal.nl Encyclopedia and the playlist will be updated with new bands frequently. We can only recommend you to lay back, “shuffle” the playlist and experience the full diversity of the different genres. Of course this list is not complete, but at least a try to create an overview about the great bands which are out there. If we missed some band, which is available on Spotify please do not hesitate to contact us under email@example.com and we will review if your band can be added as well. Please follow our playlist, as it will be updated frequently either with artists who have their debut or which we just missed to add from the beginning. We wish you a happy new year and see you in 2021! Your Folk-Metal.nl Crew
Isenmor – ‘Shieldbrother’ I don’t think there has been a year where this unanimous in giving points. Five of the seven voting team-members gave this album the maximum of 10 points. ‘Shieldbrother’ received a total of no less then 64 points. No doubt who won the competition this year. The crowdfunding was already suggesting right from the start, people had high expectations from Isenmor. And the band really mad it up to this expectations. A killer first full length. “It’s probably too early to call this a “classic” for the ages but it really has that feel of an album you have listened to hundreds of times in your life and always go back to. I love the mix/sound especially the vocals and violins being front and center but never drowning out all of the other incredible things going on. While I thought Poland’s Windmill had debut of the year wrapped up, “Shieldbrother” in one fell swoop has taken that spot over along with a very high position in the overall top albums of 2020 for me….move over Finntroll, Zmey Gorynich and Amiensus. What is “American” folk metal? Raise the stars and stripes as this album is probably one of the finest examples to date and one that will stand the test of time….amazing album.”
